How to choose your CrossFit gym
When we opened back in January of 2012, there were only two other CrossFit gyms in town. CrossFit was still a fairly big unknown, and it was just catching on in Louisville. If you wanted to do CrossFit, you either did it in your garage or you could join the gym closest to where you worked or lived. If you didn’t like the culture there, or they didn’t offer a clear path to success for your goals, tough luck. You can do it “our way”, or figure it out on your own.
That’s not the case now.
There are as many CrossFit gyms in the Louisville area as there are Starbucks. Each one is similar, but each one is significantly different from the rest. If you’re interested in CrossFit, it can be a little overwhelming trying to decide which one to go to.
Here are a few things to consider when trying to make a decision.
I put Culture first because, whether you know it now or not, joining a CrossFit gym is very different from joining a traditional big box gym. Every CrossFit gym will have a different culture. Some will be more “Hard-core”, some will focus on Competitions, some will be more of a Party place, others will be Family Friendly, and so on. You want to pick a gym that suits your personality, because it’s very likely that the people you meet at your CrossFit gym will end up being some of your closest friends.
Schedule and Class sizes
Does the gym you’re looking at have a schedule that suits your needs? You know yourself. Large scale changes aren’t likely, but you can add a stop to your commute, to or from work, or squeeze in a class on your lunch break a few times a week. And when you do show up to class, will there be enough space for you to safely and enjoyably get in a quality workout? Do you like being part of a large class? Do you feed off the energy in the room? Or would you prefer a little smaller class with more individualized attention. It’s likely that there is a gym that suits your desires.
It takes $1000 dollars and passing a test from a 2 day seminar to receive the credentials necessary to teach CrossFit. There are a lot of CrossFit coaches out there who aren’t good coaches. Also, if he or she is a jerk with a Level 1 certificate; he or she is still a jerk, and you can do better. There are a lot of CrossFit gyms that have excellent coaches, and detailed coaches development programs. You would be wise to consider whether the gym you’re considering has coaches that are not only educated but also the kind of people that you enjoy learning from. Every gym will say that they have the best coaches around. They can’t all be right.
Are you looking for more than merely showing up to a CrossFit class? Do you want Personal Training, or a way to help get your Kids fit, or even specialization within a particular discipline like Weightlifting? Do you need a program designed around your specific goal? If so, you may want to find a gym that offers specialty programs. But if you’re there just for the CrossFit and don’t want anything getting in the way of that, there are gyms that do that too.
Price is the last thing on the list because even though there are about the same number of locations in Louisville, CrossFit is different from Starbucks. You can get the same Mocha at every Starbucks in Louisville for the exact same price, but as we’ve established, every CrossFit gym is different, and therefore the value of your experience at each gym will be different as well. You should expect to pay a decent amount for a quality experience. But don’t expect a quality experience from a cheep priced gym.
Ultimately, the choice is yours. You belong somewhere, and the place won’t be the same without you. I just want you to be educated.
